Rum tasting in Antigua: samples, flavours and what to expect

The short answer

A guided rum tasting helps you compare aromas, flavours and finishes with an instructor. At Academy of Rum Antigua, each guest receives six rum samples before moving into learning, blending and bottling. You can participate at your own pace, with water available throughout.

What should you expect from a guided tasting?

A guided tasting gives you more than a row of glasses: it gives you a way to compare them. Start with aroma, take a small sip if you choose to drink, and notice the finish. An instructor can help you put a difference into words without needing a specialist vocabulary.

The useful outcome is knowing what you enjoy. A rum can smell appealing yet feel too intense for your taste, or reveal a finish you had not expected. Make a few notes you can refer to later. If you are still deciding between a tasting and a creative class, see our comparison of rum experiences.

What happens during the Academy tasting?

At Academy of Rum, our mini distillery on Galleon Beach, Antigua, each guest receives a tray of six handcrafted rum samples, with water available. The tasting is part of a wider session covering Caribbean rum history, flavour selection and your own rum creation. Instructors guide the process and offer individual assistance when needed.

Use the tasting to notice your preferences before choosing flavours. You might enjoy one sample's aroma but prefer another's finish. You do not need to know specialist vocabulary: describing something as fruity, warming or too intense for your taste is a useful starting point. See the complete Antigua experience for everything included.

How can you get more from the samples?

Take your time. Smell gently, taste a small amount if you choose to drink, and pause between samples. A simple note with three columns—aroma, taste and personal preference—can be more useful than trying to award a formal score. Comparing two samples carefully often teaches more than rushing through the tray.

There is no obligation to finish every sample. Water is provided, and responsible participation matters more than the quantity consumed. Arrange a safe journey afterwards. Our beginner's tasting guide gives you a simple way to describe what you notice.

Turn a tasting observation into a blending decision

Try to leave the tasting with one preference you can explain. “I enjoyed that aroma, but would like a gentler finish” is useful. “That is the best rum” tells your instructor much less about what you want to create. The distinction helps you move from comparing the tray to choosing a direction for your own bottle.

Each person in an Academy pair receives a tasting tray. Use that moment to discover where your preferences meet before you start the joint creation. You can share an experience without having identical tasting notes. Agree which impression should lead, then bring any disagreement to your instructor for personalised assistance.

The worked blending example shows how a simple observation can guide the next decision. Keep tasting notes separate from allergy checks: ingredient suitability should be discussed before any sample is tasted.

What should guests with allergies know?

Some of the rums used in the experience contain dairy, nuts or spices. Tell your instructor about allergies before the tasting begins so they can recommend what to avoid. An aroma description is not an ingredient declaration: a rum described as nutty may raise a question, but the description alone cannot establish whether it contains nuts.

Read our safety and allergy information before booking if you have a concern. Ask the team about your specific needs; do not assume a substitute or an allergen-free environment is available.

How should you plan the visit?

The Academy is at Loose Cannon, Galleon Beach, in the English Harbour area. It is a planned activity away from the cruise-port area in St. John's. Check the current session times and prices, then allow for your journey and early check-in. For transport arrangements and cancellation terms, use Plan your visit.

You must be 18 or older to drink. If you are choosing for a couple, decide whether you want to create one shared bottle or each make your own; the current booking options explain that distinction. Book the activity for the learning and the making, with the tasting as the beginning of the experience.

A few practical questions

Do I have to finish every rum sample?

No. Take your time, drink responsibly and do not feel obliged to finish a sample. Water is available throughout the Academy session.

Should I mention an allergy before tasting?

Yes. Tell your instructor before the tasting begins. Some rums contain dairy, nuts or spices, and the instructor can recommend what to avoid.
